A topographic map is a graphic depiction of natural and artificial features of an area of land. The details shown on the map vary widely by the purpose of the survey. A typical design-topo survey will show:

• Roadways, driveways & access
• Existing structures such as buildings and retaining walls
• Utility fixtures
• Drainage structures such as culverts and basins
• Lot boundary

A good topographic survey will provide the details your design professional needs. A few yards of dirt-work can cost more than most topographic surveys. Having a project designed that doesn't fit the features of the land can be a very expensive mishap. GIS information is often available from Government and private sources. This information can be useful for planning but rarely is it sufficient for design purposes.
